GETTING THERE

The towns of Civitella in Val di Chiana, Lucignano, Monte San Savino, Sinalunga, are about midway between Rome & Florence. They are on the western side of the Val di Chiana and are just a few km. from the A1 (Autostrada del Sole).

BACKGROUND
Lucignano: a unique town designed on an elliptical pattern unlike the circular pattern used in Monteriggioni and others in Tuscany. The main streets are interconnected with short alleys that join at the central piazza. The church of San Francesco has numerous beautiful frescoes and there is a museum close by the church. Lucignano is a lively town and it and the countryside are great places to relax in. There is a pleasant fountain with cafes nearby.

Monte San Savino: Historically caught in the battle between Florence and Arezzo; was sacked (as was Cortona) by the Arezzo bishop. The Palazzo Comunale is worth viewing.

Civitella in Valdichiana: A quiet fotified borgo; the ruined fort "La Rocca" dates from ca. 6th century AD. Inhabitants are reserved, a remnant of the slaughter of more than 115 citizens (by the occupying Germans) in 1944 in front of the church.

How to get there

By car: From A1 (either north- or southbound) take the Valdichiana exit. After you pay your toll, follow the signs to the Siena/Perugia Superstrada (SS326), direction Siena. Continue on it to your desired exit (Lucignano, Monte San Savino, or Sinalunga).

By air: Florence's Amerigo Vespucci [FLR] and Pisa [PSA] are the closest airports; Rome's Fiumicino [FCO], Milan's Malpensa [MXP], and Bologna [BLQ] airports are also convenient - e.g. there's a shuttle from Fiumicino directly to Roma Termini and the EC/IC train ride to Chiusi where you can transfer to a local train to Sinalunga. (Click here for link to train schedules)

Auto rental: The closest major rental car companies are in Arezzo - Avis is across from the train station. The Hertz location is in one of the suburbs. There are also rental companies in Chiusi.
